RenuNail Update

Today is my last day on RenuNail original and I'll be moving on to the next step of the programme for three weeks.

This has been a gem of a product. My nails are looking smoother, pinker and stronger. Since half way through my first week I've not had any more peeling or breakage at all. My nails haven't felt this indestructible or looked so pretty in a long time. It's hard to say how much they've grown as I like to keep them short but they do need more regular filing than usual.

I've been using the nail oil most days and I really like it. The RenuNail instructions say you're to keep the varnish away from your cuticles. With my slap dash application I've not been very diligent on that front and I can see why the instructions are there. My cuticles can become very dry, even with my daily nail oil application. I can only put that down to the RenuNail as they've never been like that before.

Watch this space for how I get on for the next stage of the trial. If you'd like to try RenuNail yourself, you can get it from Debenhams for £17.50.

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation

I've recently discovered this foundation even though it's been knocking around for a long time now. I do like Bobbi Brown foundations. I'm a huge fan of their stick foundations, which I have in the BBU palette I take everywhere.

The Skin Foundation reminds me a lot of Makeup Forever's HD Foundation. I've only tested the MUFE HD but from what I can tell, they seem quite similar. The Bobbi Brown foundation gives great coverage ranging from sheer to a good medium coverage with a lovely demi-satin finish. It feels really comfortable on the skin and settles really nicely.

Definitely worth checking out.

My Current Skincare System

skincare system

I’ve been getting loads of compliments on my skin lately so I thought I’d share what I’ve been using with you. In the picture above I’m just wearing a little concealer, mascara and lip colour. Living the dream! Yay!!!

In the mornings I cleanse with Zelens then apply Murad Blemish and Wrinkle Reducer Serum. For eye cream I’m using Zelens and my morning moisturiser is Dr Brandt Pore Effect. Despite being 35 I’m still prone to hormonal and stress related breakouts so my morning products are all geared towards keeping those pesky spots at bay.

My evening system is all about a thorough cleanse and keeping my skin firm and looking young. I remove my makeup with Nars Makeup Removing Oil then follow up with my Zelens Radiance Cleanser for a thorough clean. Once a week I’ll add in some Emma Hardie Exfoliating Seeds with the cleanser as well. Again, I follow up with my Murad Serum and Zelens Eye Cream. My evening moisturiser is my Zelens Moisturiser for an extra anti ageing, radiance booster.

I’ll be very reluctant to change any of these products when they run out but we all know how easily my head can be turned by something new and interesting! I’ve already got new items lined up!!! In the evenings I do my Emma Hardie facial massage to keep my circulation and facial muscles activated. I also only change my products one at a time as they run out. If I change everything at once my skin gets VERY unhappy! I also try to make sure the active ingredients in products aren’t conflicting. It’s a nice mixture of gentle and active products so my skin doesn’t get overloaded. I think this is really important.

I hope this was helpful.

Dr Lewinn’s RenuNail Challenge

I’m still going strong with my RenuNail project. This is a big deal for me. I HATE not having nail varnish on! So how is it going?

I’m being really good about putting it on every morning. I put a coat on every day and start again from scratch once a week. Drawbacks: it’s a little tricky to get the right amount on the brush and I end up with too much on. It takes a while to dry so I’m walking around with smudgy nails with bits of dust and fluff stuck in them. I just hide my hands as much as possible for the moment. That’s it, though. If I was more organised and left a few minutes for them to dry each day it would be a total non-issue.

Is there any change in my nails since I’ve been doing it for about two weeks now? Yes! Yes, there is! It took nearly a week but they’ve stopped peeling and flaking and breaking off. They’re feeling nice and strong, growing nicely and looking a lot smoother. I can’t wait to see how they look at the end of the six weeks.

Funnily, another makeup artist I know that also has a blog started a similar challenge at the very same time as I did. Jodie is trying out the Nailtiques system. You can see her progress here.

Laura Mercier Lingerie Eye and Cheek Palette

I’ve been using this palette a lot lately! It’s gorgeous. On everyone from ladies looking for a day time look to smoky eyes for parties. My favourite has been for a tv presenter interviewing celebs on the red carpet at last weekend’s BAFTAS. She looked totally red carpet-tastic using this as the basis for her look.

I love grey/taupe/mauve combinations and this has it in spades. For day time looks I like to sweep the mauve and pink across the lids and line with a grey liner for a sophisticated but day-appropriate look. For the red carpet look I put the brown through the crease, mixed the mauve and pink to blend across the lids then lined with brown pencil liner and smudged the brown shadow over the top. With fluttery lashes and a glowing complexion it was just perfect for the evening.

You can get yours from Liberty for £41.50. A bargain for six shadows and two blushers!!

Zelens – Magical Skincare

A little while back I received a set of Zelens skin care. I didn’t know a lot about it other than it was developed by a dermatologist that specialises in skin cancer. I was intrigued and started using all three products. I don’t usually switch so abruptly as my skin doesn’t like sudden change. However, this seems to be the exception that is proving the rule.

The Zelens range includes three key products. A radiance cleanser, an anti-ageing cream and an eye cream. I’m using all three. In addition to this, I use a day cream geared towards hydration and keeping breakouts at bay and a serum both day and night. I’ve not had so many compliments on my skin since I was 19!! It’s looking smooth, young and radiant! All the things you want from skin in your mid thirties!! Heck, at any age!!

So what are these products and how do they work? It’s a range that keeps eco-responsibility as its base line and includes Japanese herbal elements, plant extracts and active ingredients to keep skin alive and vibrant. These are all things that pique my interest and make me want to try a product out.

The cleanser is a creamy consistency that comes in a pump bottle. I use two pumps and always double cleanse in the evenings if I’ve been wearing makeup. It feels really gentle, doesn’t sting, tingle or leave my skin feeling dry and tight. With ingredients like camellia oil, pearl extract and vitamin E it’s very calming and brightening.

The cream comes in a pot and seems to last forever. You don’t need a lot to feel moisturised and it has a gel/cream consistency that means it’s nice to wear under makeup during the day. It really does hydrate, plump and firm skin beautifully. The main ingredient here is ursolic acid. This is an ingredient that does a whole bunch of stuff including; anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, collagen boosting.

Finally, there is an eye cream. I LOVE this product! I wear it day and night. It’s another gel/cream consistency that comes in a pot and goes beautifully under makeup. It’s helping my puffiness and my dark circles have started to look less scary. Those dark circles have plagued me all my adult life so it’s great to see them fading! This is definitely a product I’d repurchase. (So unlike me!) It is full of patented ingredients developed by Dr Lens full of sciency stuff. I’m usually a real ingredient-geek that would go through them but this would become a very long post indeed! These are serious and potent goodies!!!

Obviously, miracle products like this come with a price tag. However, they’re worth every penny. The cleanser is £40, the cream £95 and the eye cream £75. I worked this weekend with just concealer, some cream blush and mascara on and everyone kept telling me how radiant I looked. That makes it work the price tag, if you ask me!

If you click on this link, you’ll be able to see all the retailers of Zelens near you. I can’t recommend it enough!

Tresemme Heat Defence Serum

Oh how I love a double duty product. Especially one that surprises me and gives me a good hair day. I was recently introduced to the Tresemme Heat Defence Serum. My initial thoughts were, "Sounds great but not a product for my hair". I was so wrong! Again. I thought I'd give it a go today just for the heck of it and ended up having a really good hair day. Surprising seeing as serums really aren't my thing.

Don't get me wrong, I frequently use a serum on someone else's hair. Mine is so fine and easily weighed down that I haven't used a serum in years. However, it was the heat defence double action and the light weight feel of it that drew me in. I did my usual and prepped my hair with my Structure prep spray and my Tresemme Naturals mousse. After it had air dried for a little while I put a small amount of serum through before blow drying my hair straight with a ceramic round brush. Result: good hair day! It had loads of movement and was really soft without being flat or drab or greasy. I should add here that I had been careful not to put any through the roots. Just the mid lengths and ends. I did end up putting a little Tresemme 24 Hour Body spray to give it some extra oomph and a little texture (to hide the hat head later).

This serum will protect your hair up to 230 degrees so it's fine to use with GHD's. It's also a handy size to keep in your bag so you can smooth a small amount through static hat hair or control random flyaways.

It's £4.38 for 30ml and you'll be able to find it from most Boots, Superdrugs and supermarkets.

PS, I was given my serum free of charge.

Stella & Dot

I had lunch with a friend today and she gave me a gorgeous present. This beautiful necklace from Stella & Dot. Have you heard of Stella & Dot? It's a new jewellery brand in the UK. You might have seen it featured in a bunch of glossy magazines over the last few months and I know quite a few pieces were worn in the last series of X Factor as well. So what's so amazing about Stella & Dot? For starters, the pieces are beautiful, stylish and fashion forward without the matching price tag. Second of all, it's all sold via trunk shows only. You can't pick these trinkets up on the high street. Trunk shows are loads of fun! You can have them with all your friends in your home or in a gorgeous venue.

Here is a link to a video of Tamara's launch vent last year. It was in a beautiful pub in Battersea. (This is where I mention that I did Tamara's hair and makeup for the event as well.)

My necklace really cheered me up during all the cold and snow today. It even made my bobbly sweater look prettier.

You can check out more Stella & Dot goodies or get in touch about being a Stella & Dot stylist here.

Tresemme Salon Sleek Straightening Spray with Argan Oil

Straightening products aren't something I usually put near my hair. It does have a mind of its own with kinks, waves and crazy curls that I like to blow dry out but I find straightening products get in the way of my eternal pursuit of volume.

Today was a little different. With the sub-Arctic weather we're experiencing at the moment my hair is super frizzy and dehydrated. Not a good look. I wanted the shine back. Asap. I've had this product sitting in my stash for ages and I immediately thought it would be perfect seeing as it's got the argan oil booster in it.

I washed my hair using my Tresemme Split Remedy shampoo and conditioner (genius, by the way) and whilst damp put my usual concotion of Structure Foundation primer spray, Tresemme Naturals Mousse and L'Oreal TecniArt Liss Control Creme. I know that sounds like a lot of product but I'm a believer in light layering of products to get customised perfection. Then I gave my hair a rough dry till it was 75% dry and sprayed in some of the straightening spray. After that, the round brush went through it with a lower setting on the drier and, voila, shiny and smooth hair with the perfect amount of shine on it. I am one happy bunny. *hops around doing Good Hair Day Dance*

You can find Tresemme in pretty much any Boots, Superdrug and Tesco and it's super budget friendly. This straightening spray will set you back around £4.99 for a 250ml bottle. Bargain!

PS, I was generously given this product free of charge for review purposes. X

Dr Lewinn's RenuNail Challenge

I was a lucky girl last night and was treated to the low down on a bunch of gorgeous Dr Lewinn's products. Did you know that Dr Lewinn's is Australia's best selling premium brand??

I've been meaning to try their RenuNail formula for ages. Especially as my nails have been suffering for a few months now. They keep peeling, breaking and dehydration is really taking its toll.

So for the next six weeks I'm going to seriously treat them. I'm starting with four weeks of the original RenuNail. From there I'll go for almost two weeks with RenuNail sensitive and every one of those days I'm going to use the nourishing oil as well.

Watch this space. Today is day one. I'll keep you updated on how it goes.
