Things I’ve Been Loving In This Sunny Weather

I have insanely delicate skin when it comes to sun exposure. Being from Australia’s sunny shores, I’m quietly obsessed about not getting burnt. Okay, maybe not so quiet. I love the UK sun because I can walk down the street on a sunny day and not feel the sting of burn like I used to back home. It’s a much milder sun over here in Europe. However, this last week of joyous weather has been different to usual. I’m feeling that bite that I used to get in Sydney again. I don’t like it. I don’t want more freckles, burn or sun damage!

Institut Esthederm has been my favourite sun protection for years. I trust it implicitly and I know it takes care of my pale, delicate skin. This is one of those products that you need to know how to use, though. This product works internally as well as externally. Like most sunscreens, it shields you from the sun with the layer you put over your skin. It’s a little known fact that a regular sunscreen requires two  to three tablespoons of product per application. That’s a lot of product! With Institut Esthederm, the regular amount we’d normally apply is completely sufficient.

The internal protection comes from the ingredient, Adaptasun, that encourages our own melanin to rise to the top of our skin. This means that when the external protection wears off we’re not left completely exposed but have our own barrier to get us through till we reapply our product. Genius! The side note to this is that the melanin also gives us a tan. One that is even and natural. The trick to using this is that you need to plan ahead. To get the full benefit you need to start applying it once a day for three weeks before you go away on your holiday (or get any real sun exposure). This gives the product time to do what it needs to do internally. If you don’t have that kind of time, try putting it on twice a day for the ten days before you’ll be in the sun. You’ll also need to reapply every two hours whilst sun bathing.

It comes in three varieties; one, two and three suns. It depends on the climate and your skin type as to which you would choose. I’m a three sun girl. It has more protection and less of the Adaptasun ingredient that gives you the tan. If you really want to look like a bronzed goddess, try layering it over the new UVIncellium Bronzant spray. It’s another product you’ll need to use twice a day for the fifteen days before you go away, but trust me, you’ll have the best tan ever!

The other product I’m loving is Hampton Sun SPF 70 For Kids. I don’t have kids. I’m not often around kids. I like it for me. It’s a super light can with an aerosol style mist and it’s clear!!! Clear! In fact, I really love the sheen it gives to the skin while it’s on. It has a light, serumy texture that is super comfortable and it smells yummy. Being the child I am, I also get a kick out of the “toot” sound it makes when you dispense it. It’s supposed to be for The Kids but it’s so much fun to put on! Even for me!! Plus, I love the great protection I get out of it.

I won’t lie, these are at the more expensive end of the sunscreen price range. The Esthederm is £40 for 150ml and Hampton Sun is £29 for 141g. However, they will certainly last longer than your average sunscreen and you’re going to get the protection you need. It’s hard to put a price on that.

On a more disappointing note, it’s grey and cloudy as I write this. I think the sun might be gone for a while. Time to book a flight to somewhere more exotic, I suspect!!!

Lovely London

The sun has been shining on London! It’s such a rare and wondrous thing!!!!

My friend, Leona, and I had a perfect day making the most of it last week. We met early and caught the Hermes exhibit at the Royal Academy. It was amazing! The flaming saddle was quite a high point. The staff were amazing as well. They couldn’t have been more helpful making sure we didn’t miss anything.

Both of us were struggling with plague-esque colds so we decided to go sit down to recover. The Wolseley was totally calling our names and their chicken soup was exactly what we needed to keep us going! You know you’re getting something good when it’s poured out of the pot right at your table. Yummmmmm.

From there we wandered about and landed down by the preparations outside Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee Weekend. It looks like it will be great if the weather can hold out!!! It was amazingly fun to watch it all going up. There is mega bunting everywhere!!!!

With not a cloud in the sky and our energy levels waning, we decided to sit in the park for a little while. Even for a weekday it was soooooo busy!! People were sunbathing as though it was Bondi Beach!!! I don’t think I’ll ever not be weirded out by people wearing bikinis in the city.

After we found a suitable patch I set straight to work. There were super cute daisies everywhere so I couldn’t resist making daisy chains for us both to wear. Hours of entertainment! Can you tell I’m not one to sunbathe for hours at a time? I need to constantly be doing things or I get really restless and bored. Oops.

Having had arts and crafts hour, we took in a movie, went for an al fresco dinner and headed for home. Not bad for two sickies!!! I know we were forecast to have an almighty storm today and rain all week, but I really hope the weather keeps going! It just makes life so much better!!!

Loving A Bit Of 'Liv

I was trying to watch Sixteen Candles last night but iTunes decided it wasn’t to be. One thing lead to another and I found myself watching clips of Xanadu and Let’s Get Physical. It made me hanker for a glittery jumpsuit and some leg warmers in a big way. Does anyone else think Olivia Newton John is hugely under rated?

The top knot combined with the Christmas tree tinsel hair style is a low point in this but the black jumpsuit and the white dress make me swoon!

I don't think anyone else has ever done more for gym memberships and spandex, either.

All hail 'Liv!!!!

Stamps Are Back in Fashion

I do love it when a letter comes through the post with a fun stamp on it. I think these ones are too precious to send, though. Ordinarily I'd never buy a special edition stamp. It's not really my style but check these out! How can I resist??

Super Duper Overnight Skin Treatment

I’ve recently discovered my favourite way to go to bed and wake up looking refreshed, revived and glowing. I started out by taking my makeup off and applying Malin and Goetz Detox Face Mask. This has to be one of the funnest masks ever. When you put it on it starts to bubble up into an almost foam like consistency. It’s an oxygenating mask that grabs all the dirt in the skin using oxygen bubbles and bringing them to the surface. Amazing! I leave it on for five to ten minutes whilst taking a lovely bubble bath.

After I’ve washed the detox mask off I put a lovely, thin layer of Sisley's Black Rose Mask all over my face. You can leave this on for half an hour of you like but I’ve discovered that I like it best when I sleep in it. It’s amazingly hydrating. Perfect for wearing if you’re on a long flight.

Finally, over the top of the Black Rose Mask I pat in a generous measure of Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate. This is a blend od of oils that will give you seriously younger looking skin. There is evening primrose oil, omega-6 fatty acids and lavender oil to give you the appearance of looking a lot more rested than you actually are. Wohoo!

I did this combination a few nights ago and was amazed at the results! Definitely one I’ll be repeating!!!

Skin Care Products I’m Loving Right Now

tata harper cleanser

Cleansers: Right now I’m removing my makeup with a Nars cleansing oil. It’s ok but nothing to write home about. It gets my makeup off but I find it doesn’t do a brilliant job on my mascara. Drats. Meanwhile, I’ve been liking my Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser a lot. It’s a non-foaming cleanser packed with pink clay, orange blossom and apricot seed powder. It doesn’t leave my skin dry or tight but it’s looking more refined and radiant.

Toner: Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence is gorgeous! I’m really loving it! You can use this throughout the day if you like, as well. It’s got loads of hyaluronic acid in it to help retain moisture and gotu kola extract to tone the skin. I’m totally loving this one.

Serum: My serum du jour is Dr Sebagh Serum Repair. This is full of some seriously high levels of hyaluronic acid and collagen stimulating ingredients. I defy anyone not to see great results after a bottle of this! I’m using it morning and night before my eye cream and moisturiser. It’s certainly helping to keep my poor, old face held together!!!

Eye Cream: I did a post a little while ago on the eye creams I’m using. I’m still on the same ones. I tell you what, the combination of the Dr Sebagh serum and the Bakel Cool Eyes is quite something! I can really feel my eye area tighten up in the mornings when those two go on!!

Moisturiser: In the mornings I’m using my Tata Harper Rebuilding Moisturiser. This is a great one for combination skin. It’s a lovely, light texture that gives me the nourishment I need without the oily feeling half way through the day. The sodium hyaluronate locks moisture in whilst willow bark is an anti-inflammatory. It also contains rose and chamomile to give natural sun protection and increase skin elasticity.

In the evenings I’m using my good, old Caudalie Vinexpert Night Infusion Cream. I feel like a lot of people overlook Caudalie as a brand. I think it’s quite exciting. This particular product contains polyphenols from the vine of the grape plant for amazing anti-oxidant levels and a patent called Resveratrol. This is a patent that increases cellular longevity, increases cellular renewal and increases the production of collagen and elastin. It does all of this via the wonderment of grape vines!!! Amazing!!! The tube looks really small but you only need a small amount of this cream. I use a small, pea sized amount.

Facial Oil: Finally, after all of this, I pat some Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex over my face morning and night. I know you’re probably thinking that this all sounds like way too much. However, I do believe in spending more time on your skin so that you don’t need to spend as much time on makeup. It’s all about having a perfected complexion. This oil helps to balance oil production, nourishes and strengthens skin and gives it a lovely protection layer from all the horrors of environmental pollution we face every day. It absorbs really quickly into the skin and doesn’t leave a residue or cause makeup to slide, etc.

I get my Caudalie, Dr Sebagh, Bakel and Dr Brandt from Space NK and for Tata Harper I highly recommend Being Content. It’s one of my favourite stores in London. It’s been way too long since I’ve been there, in fact!!!

Eye Creams Of The Moment

eye creams

I’m using two eye creams right now. I’m using Bakel Cool Eyes in the mornings and Dr Brandt Lineless Eye Cream in the evenings. I think that everyone needs to start using some form of eye cream once they hit their early twenties. At first something gentle and hydrating is probably fine, but once you’ve hit my age you need something with a bit more oomph.

Bakel is a brand that I really like. It’s full of concentrated ingredients and usually doesn’t have more than half a dozen items on the ingredients list. I like knowing that the product I’m using isn’t mostly fillers with a tiny proportion of active ingredients. Cool Eyes is applied via a roller ball system that is really cooling and calming for eyes in the mornings. It’s great for draining away the toxins that build up and cause our puffiness and dark circles. I use half a pump for each eye. You’ll feel instantly lifted and tightened.

In the evenings I’ve been using an old favourite of mine, Dr Brandt Lineless Eye Cream. I remember when this was first launched in the UK. I liked it back then and I still like it now. It’s one of those tried and tested products that I know will work. It’s packed with vitamins C and E to help reduce my lines and wrinkles. Things like green tea for protecting against free radicals helps to make sure the entire eye area is smooth and contoured. Half a pump for both eyes is plenty.

Cool Eyes is £75 and the Lineless Eye Cream is £51. Both are available from Space NK.
